The Mzimba elderly lady never deserved such atrocious treatment in the presence of many people that chose to be silent in the face of the oppressor. That silence never helped the oppressed but encouraged the torture. As a nation, we must reflect on how we must protect the elderly and avert God’s anger that leads to a curse. I believe witchcraft is real because the Bible lists it as one of the vices (Gal. 5:20-21). However, my belief does not make me forget that many innocent people have been falsely accused of practicing it. Regrettably, older people are the primary victims because of lacking skills to defend themselves. Most of them suffer from dementia, a condition that makes them lose their cognitive functioning — thinking, remembering, and reasoning — to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. No wonder Scripture requires that we respect them (Lev. 19:32). The same Scripture also teaches us not to overcome evil with evil, knowing vengeance only belongs to God ((Romans 12:19-21).
